Hernias are weaknesses in the muscles of the abdominal cavity that allow the internal organs to protrude out, forming a lump. Common sites for hernia formation are in the groins, at the umbilicus or at the site of previous surgical scars. Hernias can cause discomfort, and in rare circumstances the tissues may become caught in the hernia and lead to a medical emergency such as a bowel blockage. Hernias usually slowly increase in size over time.
Hernia repair surgery may be performed through a small cut, or even as a keyhole operation, depending on the size and location of your hernia. The repair is often strengthened by inserting a plastic mesh. Hernia repair surgery is often able to be performed as day-only surgery.
